Most of the driveways we lay are for two or three cars, in tarmac, block paving or a mix of the two, such as a tarmac drive with a block edge or border. Every drive starts with digging out to the right depth and putting down a compacted stone base, because that is what stops a driveway sinking or rutting where the wheels sit. Drainage is planned at the same stage: the surface is laid to a fall so water runs away from the house, and channel drains go across the entrance or in front of the garage where they are needed. Once the base is in, the edging is set, then the tarmac or blocks are laid, and we clean up and leave the area tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tarmac or block paving: which is better?
Tarmac is usually quicker to lay and costs less over a big area. Block paving costs more but gives you more choice of colour and pattern, and single blocks can be lifted and relaid if needed. Plenty of customers go for tarmac with a block edge.
How long does a new driveway take?
Most two or three car drives take between a few days and a week, depending on the dig-out, the material and the weather. We give you a timescale with the estimate.
Can I park on it straight away?
On finished block paving, usually yes. Fresh tarmac needs time to harden, so we tell you how long to keep cars off it.
Will water drain away properly?
That is worked out before anything is laid. The drive is set to fall away from the house, with channel drains added wherever water would otherwise collect.
