After a bad night of wind, the fences that come down are rarely the oldest ones. They are the tallest, the most solid, and the ones with posts that were never going to hold what was asked of them. A fence is a sail, and the more completely it blocks the wind the harder the wind works on it.

Solid fences catch the most wind
This is the counter-intuitive part. A close-boarded or solid panel fence gives the best privacy and the worst wind performance, because it presents an unbroken surface for the wind to push against, and it transfers all of that load into the posts.
A fence that lets some air through experiences much lower load. Slatted, hit-and-miss and louvred designs still provide a great deal of privacy, particularly at an angle, while allowing wind to pass rather than fight. On genuinely exposed boundaries they are usually the more sensible choice.
Height compounds the problem. Every extra course of board increases both the sail area and the leverage on the post, so a tall solid fence on an exposed line is asking a great deal of what is holding it up. Sometimes the right answer is a slightly lower fence with planting above or behind it.
Trellis or an open top section is another route: it adds apparent height and privacy while giving the wind somewhere to go.

The post is the whole argument
In wind, fences fail at the posts. Panels blow out of their fixings or posts snap or lever loose at ground level, and everything else about the fence is irrelevant once that has happened.
Depth is the first factor. A post has to be set deep enough for the height it carries, and on an exposed site the honest answer is deeper than the default. Setting posts properly in concrete, with the right volume of it and time to cure before load is applied, does more for survival than any panel choice.
Material is the second. Concrete posts do not rot, and where they are used the panel becomes the sacrificial element: a panel blown out of concrete posts is replaced in minutes, whereas a snapped timber post takes its neighbours with it and needs digging out.
Spacing is the third, and it is the one most often stretched to save money. Wider spacing means longer spans, more load per post and more flex in the panels. On an exposed boundary, closer spacing is cheap insurance.

Ground, slopes and gravel boards
The ground the posts go into changes everything. Soft, peaty or waterlogged ground gives a post far less to hold onto, and a post that is perfectly adequate in firm ground can work loose in saturated ground over a few seasons.
On a slope, a fence should be stepped or raked deliberately. Stepping keeps each panel level with a stepped gap beneath, which needs closing with gravel boards cut to suit. Raking follows the slope with panels built to the angle. Forcing a standard panel to follow a contour produces gaps at the bottom and stress at the fixings.
Gravel boards matter on every fence and doubly here. They keep the timber out of contact with wet ground, where rot starts, and they close the gap under a stepped fence so animals and wind-driven debris cannot come through.
Where ground conditions are genuinely poor, it is better to hear that at quotation stage than to discover it when the fence starts leaning.
- Soft or waterlogged ground needs deeper or different post fixing.
- Step or rake a fence on a slope; never force a level panel to follow it.
- Gravel boards keep timber out of wet ground and close stepped gaps.
- Expect a good contractor to raise poor ground conditions before quoting.
Planting, shelter and the long view
A fence is not the only way to make a boundary. On very exposed sites, a hedge or a planted shelter belt does something no fence can: it filters wind rather than blocking it, and it improves rather than degrades over time.
The practical answer is often both. A fence gives immediate privacy, security and a clear boundary line, while planting behind it grows into the long-term shelter. In ten years the planting is doing most of the work and the fence is a backstop.
Good fencing gives an outdoor space a clear, secure and well-finished boundary, and the right treatment can be coordinated with wider landscaping so the boundary sits naturally within the finished garden rather than standing alone against the weather.
It is worth thinking about maintenance access too. A fence with planting hard against both sides is difficult to repair or treat, so leaving a working gap on at least one side saves considerable trouble later.
